Emergences – Open Borders

‘Emergences’ formed part of a state-wide project titled ‘Open Borders’ that brought together regionally-based artists from across the state in a series of 15 exhibitions.

In a first of its’ kind, 11 artists from the South West were selected for the ‘Emergences’ exhibition – Amanda Bell, Elaine Clocherty/Kyllie Deltondo/Mick Hart/Danny Jennings, Shannon Clohessy, Francesco Geronazzo, Shayne Hadley, Yu-Hua Lan, Elisa Markes-Young, Katharina Meister, Kate Alida Mullen, Martine Perret and Helen Seiver.

Curator Christopher Young and Assistant Curator Anita Pettit said the ‘Emergences’ exhibition offered all artists a considerable opportunity to present their practices and skills to a new and diverse audience, network with other creatives, proffer challenging ideas and engage in a dialogue about complex issues.

The anticipation around the artist selection, curation and opening was immense as a project of this high calibre provided an opportunity for local South West artists to exhibit in such a prestigious venue being the Holmes àCourt Gallery at Vasse Felix. Exhibitions at Vasse Felix are always curated by the Holmes à Court Gallery in Perth therefore this was a very unique opportunity for local curators to engage with local South West artists to hold an exhibition in this space.

The final culminating phase of the regional exhibition series was a survey exhibition at the John Curtin Gallery in Perth. South West artists selected were Shayne Hadley, Kate Alida-Mullen, Elisa Markes-Young and Helen Seiver which enabled them to showcase the depth and breadth of their contemporary regional visual arts practice. The opportunity to see their work displayed to the highest industry standards within a peak metropolitan venue of national repute was of critical importance. For many artists, inclusion of their work represented the highest achievement of their creative career, elevating their practice, exposing them to new audiences and opportunities.
