Fugazi Gallery champions alternative and independent art, featuring local and international artists across diverse mediums. Collaborations between Southwest WA and Brooklyn artists have birthed the ‘Chopped Liver’ zine, with Volume 1 launching in NY in September ’24. We will forge connections with grassroots artists for future projects, including ‘Chopped Liver Vol 2,’ involving creatives from NY, Austin, and Los Angeles. ‘Chopped Liver Vol 2’ invites artists to explore ‘Reclaiming the Future – Overcoming the Roots of Discontent,’ culminating in international events in 2025 in Australia and the US, featuring a printed zine, music, film, photography, poetry, and performance art.

Tell us about your journey to becoming a creative?

Starting as a mosaic artist using recycled materials, I later transitioned into the art gallery world through a career in community-led emergency management. This background honed my skills in collaboration and strategic planning, with a passion for DIY, community-focused creative projects. Through initiatives like the ‘Chopped Liver’ zine, I merge my passion for art with a dedication to fostering connected communities.

How has your creative practice changed over time?

It has shifted from a solitary approach to a collaborative model. Initially a solo mosaic artist, my background in community planning has influenced my artistic journey. Recently, I’ve begun entrusting the creative process to the artists themselves, which fosters a more inclusive environment, empowering artists and enriching the creative process while strengthening the shared purpose within our projects.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced working in the creative sector?

Keeping the gallery financially viable AND independent (allowing for greater artistic freedom & innovation).

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

“Never serve up a thin broth” – Henry Rollins

What would your dream project look like, if you had unlimited money and time?

Chopped Liver Vol 2 – a series of events in 2025/ 2026 in both Australia and the United States, including US artists traveling to Australia to participate and collaborate with Western Australian artists and communities.

Name some creatives that inspire you and why?

RZA – bringing all those challenging, diverse talents in Wu-Tang Clan to become a cultural juggernaut through relentless dedication; championing innovative, unconventional artists through the commitment required to turn ideas into reality.

Jimmy Lovine – like RZA, his ethos aligns seamlessly with the Fugazi Gallery’s mission: empowering and uplifting unconventional artists to new heights of creative expression.

Liz Davenport – her ability to align creative vision with staying true to one’s ideals, demonstrating that art and activism can be powerful allies. Working for Liz taught me the importance of integrity and courage in championing causes one believes in, especially in the arts.
